Let's Go Bulldogs!

Bulldog Patrol
At the April 11th board meeting, Claysburg-Kimmel Elementary's Bulldog Patrol was recognized.  The ten members of the Bulldog Patrol monitor the hallways and common areas during morning transition and afternoon dismissal.  They keep the halls safe and make sure students are getting to the appropriate classrooms.  These students were placed on the Bulldog Patrol because they embody the strong, positive values that CKE emphasizes to our student body.  They are also well respected by their peers and admired by our younger students.  CKE is extremely proud of the Bulldog Patrol members.  All ten of them have done a marvelous job of keeping our students safe!

Author Visit

Carolyn Crimi

Claysburg-Kimmel Elementary hosted an author visit on Wednesday, April 4.  The visiting author was Cayolyn Crimi.  She lives outside of Detroit and has been an author of children's books for many years.  During her presentations, the students and Ms. Crimi went on a “Story Hunt” which was both fun and educational.  She talked about her writing process with a special emphasis on where she gets her ideas. She also discussed the many revisions she makes before she sends a manuscript to an editor.  She then ended the sessions with a reading from one of her books and held a question and answer period.  CKE worked in conjunction with the Hollidaysburg Area School District to make this author visit possible.  We are thankful for HASD's cooperation and we look forward to working with them on future author visits!

Mrs. Ferguson also completed a grant application through the Claysburg Education Foundation’s Venture Grant initiative.  The Foundation approved her application and awarded her $557.70 for her proposal, Qballs made by PeeQ Technologies.  Qballs are portable, throwable microphones.  It is perfect for classroom discussion and audience engagement.  These pictures are of grade 1 students using Qballs during an acrostic poem lesson.

Ocean Animal Rescue

Students from Miss Wicker’s reading class recently read a story about life in the ocean. The class was so interested they decided to do some extra research on ocean life. Each student chose their own topic, researched it with books from the school library and internet resources. After gathering research, each student wrote a brief expository paragraph detailing their topic. To go along with their research each student was able to use the 3D printer to create their ocean animal. Students that completed the project with proficiency were able to take their model home.

At the Jan. 10th board meeting, Mrs. Tara Woolridge, a grade 6 teacher and an after school STEM teacher, represented the elementary STEM students.  These STEM students have been working on different watershed activities (water cycle in a bag, calculating water usage, water filtration, etc.) in preparation for a Winter Watershed Festival at Saint Francis University that was held on December 18.  At this festival, CKE students presented the activities they have been working on during the after school STEM program as well as plans for future activities.  Our STEM students were awarded three ribbons at the festival (most innovative project, most artistic project, and best communicated project)!  CKSD board of directors acknowledged these students and their accomplishments at the board meeting and issued certificates to all of the students involved in the SFU festival.
